HUGH SCHULZ
Famous "Brushmen of the Bush" (with Pro Hart)
Huge Oil Painting - 122x90cm
HUGH SCHULZ (1921-2004) is one of the famous Brushmen of the Bush that made outback art and Broken Hill famous. Here is what the SMH (May 26, 2006) wrote about them:
Between 1973 and 1989, the five mates from Broken Hill - Hart, Absalom, Pickup, Eric Minchin and Hugh Schulz - toured the world, staging more than 50 exhibitions and raising $1 million for charity in today's terms.
"We were five very diverse characters," says Pickup from his home in Mackay. "Eric was an accountant. Jack was a kangaroo shooter and former boxer. Hugh was a miner and prospector. Pro was a professional artist and former miner. And I was a radio station manager.
"We had different styles, and that was part of the appeal of the group. Pro was Pro. Hugh's work was naive and extremely detailed. Eric's was a very careful depiction of country. And Jack's work is Australian landscape from the point of view of someone who has lived in the bush all his life."
